We are family

Family weekend, this weekend!

First, on Friday night, we had my work birthday shindig, and my sister TL, brother-in-law Tim, and nephew Q came along, too. Sadly, our friend and co-worker Rob couldn’t make it—we missed you! We went to one of my favorite restaurants,
Casa Vega. Afterwards, cake & prizes at my boss LG’s house. We had a white cake with white frosting, with peanut butter mousse and banana filling. The cake was so moist and the frosting and filling were so light—it was incredible! My prizes were two beautiful hats (one beautiful cloche-esque hat made by Leah’s own two hands, and one adorable newsie hat from LG and her husband, RG) and TiVo, including a year’s subscription (from everyone)! Wow!! I was the only one at the office who didn’t have it at home, and that couldn’t go on, so they got me The Box. After the festivities, Q was having a ball romping all over the big backyard and the deck, playing with the dogs, throwing lemons that had fallen from the tree like baseballs. He and RG kind of bonded, especially during lemon-throwing (which I suspect RG taught him), which was really fun to watch. Second birthdays: I highly recommend them!

Saturday, after having my hair cut & colored, I went to TL & Tim’s to help them get ready for a birthday party they were hosting. TL had sprained her ankle earlier in the week and I knew cleaning a house with a small child around with a bad ankle would not have lead anywhere good (turns out there were three children--Tim's two sons were also over this weekend). So I stayed both Saturday and Sunday and alternated between cleaning and helping make the cakes for the party and occupying Q while TL decorated the cakes. It also turned out that Tim threw his back out while doing yard work for the party on Sunday (!), so it was fortuitous that they had an extra adult on-hand. I was so glad to be there to help—as it was, they were both fried physically and emotionally by Sunday night. I felt so bad for them both! But I did what I could, and I did get to spend quality time with my little Q. We played baseball (I threw a big yard ball to him and he would hit it with his little toy bat), did some puzzles, jumped on a pile of pillows on the floor (I passed on that one and just did supervisory duty), engaged in general kid silliness like making funny faces and voices and laughing about it. He’s such a wonderful blend of smart and silly, like his mom and dad—both are both, in varying degrees. As well as being sweet and adorable. Love that kid!!

Today (my Memorial Day off), I’m settin’ up my TiVo. I already know how to operate it, having learned on TL & Tim’s TiVo. So I’m picking my settings, my shows. Never will I go out and slap my forehead for having forgotten to set my VCR to tape my shows! Leah will never have to hear “Hey, did you TiVo Gilmore Girls? I forgot to set the VCR” again. It’s all good...

I was going to paint for my business cards today, but it’s getting late in the day and I’m thinking of going to see The DaVinci Code later tonight. I read the book, as has everyone, and I’m not sure the movie will be as hypnotic as the book, having to condense all the information into a two-and-a-half-hour time slot. But everyone I know who has seen it has really liked it—and they’ve also read the book, so they have something to compare it against. Maybe post-movie painting while I watch what my TiVo is now taping...

One other thing I did on Saturday morning was bring a basket of goodies to my new neighbors. I put in cheese tortellini, marinara sauce, raspberry jam, crackers, brie, and chocolates in a small tin. Dinner for two. They loved it! I put a little card on that had my name and unit # so they would remember it. They seemed like newlyweds—they were very cute together. I’ll probably invite them over for drinks or dinner down the line. I’m beginning to dig this ‘being social’ thing! I might be entertaining regularly before long!
